Here are pictures from the Komen Race for the Cure. There were 30,000 participants this year, and 80 of them were from TWU, which made us win the Largest Collegiate Team Award.

PM Pals

Hi, SOTA members. If you're available this Saturday from 8:30 to 1:00, December 8th, this is the service opportunity for you! PM Pals, a program at St. Luke's United Methodist Church that provides respite to families with children with special needs, is giving parents a chance to do their Christmas shopping. Lots of coffee, breakfast, and lunch will be provided. Your main responsibility is to play with a kid for 4 hours! Hello!

This very daunting event of cooking chili for 100 people is right around the corner, next Tuesday evening to be exact. The plan is to have dinner ready by 7pm and be out of there by 9pm. This would necessitate being at the Ronald McDonald house (directions below) by 6pm or even earlier. However, I know the MOT 3's have FW class until 6:00pm and some will be doing their presentations. If you can arrange with the instructor to leave early, please do so. I've spoken with Dr. Rydin and I will be leaving class by 5:30 in order to start setting up at the RM House (if you want to ride with me, let me know). If you can't be there by 6pm, please send me an e-mail to let me know when you will be there. NO MATTER WHAT, PLEASE SEND ME AN E-MAIL TO CONFIRM THAT YOU WILL BE COMING.

The plan is to prepare and serve dinner for around 100 people, approximately 65 parents and 35 children. I had hoped to do some sort of activity for the children during or right after dinner, but I think we're already a bit out of league cooking for such a large group. If you have any interest in putting together a craft or other activity for the kids to do, let me know.

If you have signed up to bring food, please put it in the peds lab before Monday. I will put a box in there tomorrow (Thursday) labeled "for Ronald McDonald House".

Hello SOTA members! (students and faculty)

Here is information on how to sign up to participate in the Komen Houston Race for the Cure that will happen on Saturday, October 6th, 2007 at Sam Houston Park -- Downtown .

I have started a team and here is the information you need to sign up:

1. Go to http://www.komen-houston.org/


2. Click Race for the Cure tab (in the middle of the screen)


3. On right hand side of screen click Join a Team


4. Under Team Name type: SOT- TWU-Student Occupational Therapy Association;
   under Team Division choose School/College/University


5. Then click Search for a Team


6. You should be able to find our team (my name will appear as team captain, Lauren Disler) and on the right hand side of the screen click Join


7. Fill in the required information and pay the $30.00 entry fee ($25.00 for breast cancer survivors, $50.00 if you choose to participate in Sleep in for the Cure)

Myself and Jamie have participated in past Race for the Cure and we both found the experience to very moving and a great way to give back to our community. Please let me or Jamie know if you have any other questions.

Very important: If you register online by midnight September 30th your Race packet is mailed FREE! (this includes race packet, bib, t-shirt)

Rebuilding Together Houston

Hey MOTs! Hope those of you who made it enjoyed the first SOTA meeting of the year! For those of you who didn't make it, you're probably wondering who I am: I'm the service chairperson for SOTA, so if you're interested in volunteering somewhere at sometime this year, please contact me!

Here's a little more information of Rebuilding Together Houston. There is one house project in the Fall and another in the Spring. For this Fall, the work days have been identified as October 20 th and 27th, with November 3rd being held as a rain day. The web site for this effort is: http://www.rebuildingtogetherhouston.org/. You do not need to have home-building skills or tools, just the time and desire to serve the low-income, elderly, or disabled whose homes need some revitalizing!

Memory Walk Alzheimer's Association

We are recruiting volunteers for the Memory Walk.

When:September 15th

Where:Buffalo Bayou Trail starting at the Hobby Center Downtown 800 Bagby Street, Houston TX 77002

Why: We need help with last minute details, loading equipment etc. at the office the Friday before 5 pm. Set up begins at 6.00 a.m and the walk and tear down ends at about 10.30 a.m
We need volunteers to help with registration, manning information booths, handing out water during the walk and with the walk location set up and tear down.

Hello PM Pals Volunteers! I hope you all are doing well! Our next PM Pals is Friday August 17th with the local fire department as our main event! Please RSVP by Tuesday August 14th to let me know if you will be joining us. We have a lot of families who would like to attend since we took the month of July off, so we would love to have you!! We have one family who is planning a special double date with friends based on her family's month at PM Pals, so it shows how much the parents appreciate their night off. Childcare can be provided for your little ones, just let me know so I can make arrangements. Parent's Night Out

Hey class! Lynn Tupper, the clinical director of the OT Center who came and spoke to us last semester, recently requested volunteers from SOTA for Parent's Night Out at the Houston Area Respite Center, of which she is the program coordinator. Since our next meeting isn't for another month, I wanted to e-mail this information out so you can get involved now if you would like.

Parent's Night Out is every Friday night from 6:30pm to 10:30 pm and meets at Gethsemane United Methodist Church. A typical evening will include games, crafts, music, movies and loads of fun events. The programs are created to offer the participants a great time in a nonsectarian environment. While HARC plans for an inclusion program with a large variety of group activities, HARC also has 1:1 activities for kids who are not ready for group events. This also affords parents a night out to be spent however they wish.
